Lily Allen Album Review

(Courtesy of Google Images)
Lily Allen, one of Britain’s most popular singers who is most known for talking about other female singers, is back. Her form has not changed that much musically seeing as her new album, “It’s not me it’s you”, sounds like a continuation of her 2006 debut ; “Alright still”. Allen is a prime example of an artist that is following the old adage, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Why should she change a winning formula, her debut only went platinum three times and earned Ms. Allen a Grammy nomination. Her electronic beats mixed with her quiet but angelic voice create an upbeat catharsis for a listener to hear and enjoy.
The biggest things that have improved on her sophomore set have been her lyrics and her vocal control. Don’t get it twisted her first album was great lyrically. It was filled with catchy tricked out pop tracks that were mainly upbeat and mid-tempo. This album expands on what the first started by keeping the cleverness of the lyrics but adds a maturity that was not present on the debut. Her second album encompasses many different topics including, social, sex, relationships, gay, abandonment and identity issues. The genius of the album is these important issues are hidden behind poptastic goodness. Her hooks and melodies are truly first rate and only add to the greatness of her second disc. Allen has also leaped over the notion that this upcoming set will be anywhere near a sophomore slump.

Standouts on this album are “back to the start” which talks about a relationship that has gone wrong and needs to start anew. “Not fair”, which is a catchy song that references a man in a relationship that does everything right but cannot deliver in the bedroom. Another standout song entitled, “he wasn’t there”, deals with giving a person the time to get their priorities in check before entering into a relationship. Then the person that waited for their mate to get stuff together is happy because the partnership was worth the wait. “I could say”, is about letting a person leave a union and being relieved that they are gone because they were caged within the relationship. Other good tracks include the lead singer “the fear” and fag hag, which is a bonus track from I-tunes.
This sophomore effort is a really good one. It will be interesting to see how it will fair within the economy /market that the music industry is in at the moment. Some artists have recently struggled because they have tried to rush an album. Some artists have struggled because what they produced has not been good enough or has not stacked up well with the competition. Allen comes at an interesting time because she is the only girl from Britain that still needs to come out. Adele, Leona Lewis, Kate Nash, Natasha Bedingfield, Duffy and Estelle have all come and gone. We will see how Allen will hold it down for the “it” girls of the United Kingdom.
It’s the 2009 NAACP Image Awards the Recap
But first A little History…..I was looking on the website and I ran across the History of this event and I found it interesting, here are some clips of the history of this great event.
Presented annually, the NAACP Image Awards is the nation’s premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice.
The NAACP Image Awards originally aired late night for eight years in the “Saturday Night Live” time slot on the NBC Network. Since 1996, the NAACP Image Awards has been shown in primetime on the FOX television network, where they have become a major programming event.
To understand the importance of the NAACP Image Awards, it has to be placed in a social and historical context. Ideas and images create the belief systems that control our individual and societal actions. When it comes to forming ideas, reinforcing stereotypes, establishing norms and shaping our thinking nothing affects us more than the images and concepts delivered into our lives on a daily basis by television, motion picture, recordings and literature. Accordingly, there is ample cause for concern about what does or does not happen in these mediums when there is little or no diversity in either opportunities or the decision making process.
The NAACP has been involved in the continuing struggle for greater participation by African Americans in the entertainment industry and portrayal of Black people on the screen since 1915, when the organization launched a nationwide protest against the showing of the movie “Birth of a Nation” by D. W. Griffith. The film, set in the period immediately after the Civil War, depicted Black people as savages and the reconstruction era in our nation as a period of corruption. It remains today one of the most controversial films ever made.
The reason this history is so important is because from reading it you can see/understand the struggle that African- Americans have had within the American Dream..African Americans have come so because of organizations like the NAACP and will continue to advance because we are strong, intelligent, savvy and determined. It is important that the Image Awards are around..
