Swine Flu Update
Straight from Cnn.com you guys here you go
GENEVA, Switzerland (CNN) — The World Health Organization on Wednesday raised its pandemic alert to 5, its second-highest level, warning of widespread human infection from the swine flu outbreak that originated in Mexico.
Dr. Margaret Chan, the U.N. agency’s director-general, said the decision to raise the alert on the 6-point scale indicated that all countries should “immediately” activate pandemic preparedness plans.
*Update* Now schools are closing because of the virus, this is also from Cnn.com
WASHINGTON (CNN) — At least 74 schools have closed across the country because of confirmed or probable cases of swine flu and 30 more have closed as a precautionary measure, the Department of Education said Wednesday.
The elementary, junior high and high schools have closed because of the H1N1 virus, Department of Education spokesman Massie Ritsch said.
The closures of public and private schools across eight states affect about 56,000 students out of an estimated 55 million students attending the nation’s 100,000 kindergarten through 12th grade schools, Ritsch said.
Some of the schools that were closed had already reopened, he said.
In addition to closures announced earlier Wednesday, the Fort Worth Independent School District in Texas said it will temporarily close all of its schools until further notice, affecting roughly 80,000 students, according to its Web site.
Schools will likely not reopen any sooner than Monday, May 11, the district said.
School officials said they made the decision after receiving official confirmation of one case of swine flu at one campus and news of three other probable cases at three more schools.
“We have been diligently following the recommendations of our local public health authorities since this crisis first began,” Superintendent Melody Johnson said. “We will continue to work with the senior-most staff of the local health department.”
The Madison County, Alabama, Schools district, which includes Huntsville, will also close its schools Thursday and Friday due to two probable cases at an elementary school.
On Wednesday, President Obama called on schools with confirmed or possible swine flu cases to “strongly consider temporarily closing so that we can be as safe as possible.”
Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Wednesday that everyone involved in schools needs to “pitch in and do our part to prevent the spread of this flu virus.”
“Use the same common sense and courtesy that you would use during winter flu season: Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough and stay home if you are sick,” Duncan said.
The secretary said the department is closely monitoring the flu outbreak and urged schools to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Do what is appropriate for the health of your communities, your schools and your students,” Duncan said.
Department of Education officials and experts from the CDC held a conference call Monday with more than 1,700 people from national education associations, state school offices, individual schools and school districts.
The Department of Education emphasized the need for “common sense” preventative measures among students and faculty in school facilities, an official said.
Education officials also stressed the need for people showing any flu-like symptoms to stay away from school and called on administrators to report any suspected or confirmed cases to local public health authorities as well as the Department of Education.
If a school has a confirmed case of swine flu, the CDC recommends closing the facility for about seven days.
“This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharm industry and the business community that certain actions now should be taken with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace,” Chan said.
The announcement came as the number of confirmed cases increased rapidly across the world.
The WHO and national governments have confirmed 148 cases in nine countries. Most of those cases are in the United States, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 91 cases.
The figures include seven deaths in Mexico and one in the United States. More than 2,700 other patients worldwide are believed to be suffering from the virus that government officials call by its technical name, 2009 H1N1.
The first cases of the virus were detected in Mexico, where health officials suspect swine flu in more than 150 other deaths and roughly 2,500 illnesses. As of late Wednesday, 99 cases had been confirmed — up from 26, Mexico’s health secretary reported. An eighth fatality was also confirmed. iReport.com: “Regular life” in Mexico with masks
The additional cases and fatality were not immediately confirmed by WHO
Researchers do not know how the virus is jumping relatively easily from person to person, or why it’s affecting what should be society’s healthiest demographic. Many of the victims who have died in Mexico have been young and otherwise healthy.
The outbreak has prompted Mexican authorities to order about 35,000 public venues in Mexico City to shut down and restrict restaurants to serving only take-out meals.
All nonessential government offices and private business were ordered to close between May 1-5, with only skeletal staffing allowed when necessary, Mexico’s health secretary announced Wednesday.
Mexican officials said it was too soon to determine what kind of economic impact the decision would have on the country.
Germany and Austria became the latest European countries to report swine flu on Wednesday, while the number of cases increased in the United Kingdom and Spain. Peru reported its first case late Wednesday.
Yet Chan reiterated the WHO’s recommendation not to close borders or restrict trade in response to the outbreak, saying the world “is better prepared for an influenza pandemic than at any time” in history.

“We need to maintain a level of calmness so that we will continue to manage this in a rational manner,” she said, adding that pork is safe for consumption as long as it is cooked properly.
President Obama downplayed the possibility of closing the U.S. border with Mexico, where the recent occurrence of the deadly virus began.
“It would be akin to closing the barn door after the horses are out,” Obama said during his Wednesday evening news conference.
Obama said he’ll be looking to health officials for guidance on how to handle travel between the two countries.
The $1.5 billion Obama requested from Congress to help fight the outbreaks will help health officials monitor and track the virus and replenish the supply of anti-viral drugs, he said.

Swine influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory disease that affects pigs. When the flu spreads person to person, instead of from animals to humans, it can continue to mutate, making it harder to treat or fight, because people have no natural immunity.
Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The WHO’s “Phases of Pandemic Alert,” which has been in existence for five years, characterizes phase 5 as a human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region, signaling that a pandemic is imminent.
The highest level, phase 6, is defined by community-level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region, according to the agency.
About a quarter of the U.S. stockpile of anti-viral drugs will be distributed to states by Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.

U.S. officials also are asking scientists whether additional measures to screen for flu symptoms were needed at U.S. ports of entry, she said. Already, customs officers have asked 49 people to submit to tests for the H1N1 virus, she said. Of those tests, 41 have been negatives and the remaining eight have not yet come back.
Researchers in the United States have already taking steps to crack the genetic code of the virus behind the swine flu outbreak in order to produce a vaccine, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

GM cutting 23,000 jobs by 2011
General Motors announced plans to cut 23,000 U.S. jobs by 2011, drop its storied Pontiac brand and slash 40% of its dealer network in its latest bid to stay out of bankruptcy.
GM also announced an offer to its bondholders to swap $27 billion of the company’s unsecured debt for stock. GM is offering bondholders 225 shares of its stock for every $1,000 it owes the bondholders in principal. The move will greatly dilute the value of GM shares held by current stockholders.
Still, shares of GM (GM, Fortune 500), a component of the Dow Jones industrial average, gained nearly 10% in pre-market trading following the announcement due to hopes that the company will now be able to avoid bankruptcy.
It is really going to get worse out there and I hope most of those people are looking for jobs now..It is always good to have some sort of back up plan…Well, will you miss your Pontiac???

Bea Arthur Passes

(Courtesy of Google Images)
Oh No……One of my favorite Golden Girls has moved on into a better life….I am referred to as her most of the time within my circle of friends hehe so this is really sad to see her go. Here is the article about her life and death…She passed from a serious bout of cancer.
LOS ANGELES, April 25 (UPI) — Bea Arthur, who went from supporting roles on Broadway to stardom in two groundbreaking TV sitcoms died Saturday in Los Angeles, a family spokesman said.
Arthur was 86, spokesman, Dan Watt, told The New York Times. He said she had cancer.
Born Bernice Frankel, Arthur dreamed as a girl in Cambridge, Md, of going on the stage. She changed her name to Beatrice because she thought it would look impressive on a theater marquee, the Times said.
Her Broadway musical roles included Lucy Brown in Kurt Weill’s “Three-Penny Opera,” Yente the Matchmaker in “Fiddler on the Roof” and Vera Charles in “Mame” — a role that brought her a Tony Award.
In 1970, when she was visiting her then-husband, director Gene Saks, in Los Angeles, producer Norman Lear convinced her to appear in his hit TV show “All in the Family.”
Arthur’s character, Maude Findlay, soon got a spinoff show. In seven years, the show explored hot-button issues like abortion and women’s rights — “everything but hemorrhoids,” Arthur said in a 2001 interview.
Arthur went on to “The Golden Girls,” where she played Dorothy Zbornak, one of four older women sharing a house.
She was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards — winning in 1988 for “The Golden Girls” and in 1977 for “Maude.”
This is so sad but we all have to go at some point…She will be dearly missed

Day 26 Album Review
Riding off of the wave of their highly successful series, Making the Band, the boys are back and hoping for another number one album. After the recent shocker of Bad Boys lead group, Danity Kane being dropped from the label, it is up to the boys to carry on the tradition in group excellence. Their sophomore effort titled “Forever in a Day” is in stores now and packs an R&B punch that most fans will be able to appreciate. There are many cuts on the album that make it a winner. The songs include great writing, terrific melodies, beautiful harmonies and excellent rifting up and down the album. It is easy to see the boys are poised to show off their chops as performers. From this album, it is easy to see why Diddy called this boy band the best he had ever worked with during his career.

The show has taken some twist and turns this season, many of the members have had verbal and physical battles that have taken the show to a new level on the drama meter. The biggest problem has been Qwanell Mosley, also known as Que because of his outlandish antics during most of the taping of the show. There is no doubt this recent surge in drama is for promotional purposes, but now it seems the guys have found their center and are ready to take the world by storm.
Many of the songs that appear on the album are very well crafted and give fans the best of both R&B worlds. There are certain songs that cater to more traditional R&B fans and others that are specifically for a more modern R&B audience. This type of balance will most likely ensure the boys of Day26 a successful comeback disc. The first single off of the highly anticipated album “Imma Put it on Her”, is an intense R&B track that shows off the boys improved vocals. Despite the rapping from Diddy, who feels the need to be on all of his acts tracks, the beat flows and gives one a cruising summertime feeling. Another standout on the album is “Shawty What’s Up” which is an 808 centered swagger driven song that tells how the boys can pick up the ladies in any situation. On the slower jam side, “Girlfriend and Babymaker” standout as the songs kids will be made to one day.
This will be the first time that the boys will be out of the heavy shadow Danity Kane always cast over them during their early careers. The band has to show they can make it on their own and that they do not have to depend on a tv show to make them superstars. In doing this, they also have to step up at this time and prove themselves as one of the best male groups around. It would also be the perfect time to do so because most male groups have fallen off or are nowhere to be found at the moment. Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, 112 and Blackstreet have all fallen by the waist side and Boyz II Men are past their prime. This is the album that this group needs in order to take their status from being a solid group that is second rate, to the first rate superstars they can be. “Forever in a Day” is a wonderful album that R&B fans will enjoy for years to come.
